This is one of the few paintings I have done by doing a sketch first, normally I like to work improvisationally with no plans before I start a painting. I got the layout idea from an art quilt I made a few years ago when fiber was my media of choice. This painting has something of the sectioned off layout a quilt and that is where the similarities end. The blue area is sky and the lower section is the land beneath. The drawing in the sky area for some reason reminds me of the northern lights, if they were black lines instead of sheets of flowing transparent color. Maybe it is the scale that makes me see the connection from the drawing to the northern lights. I would like to see the northern lights in person they look amazing in photographs. 

I have continued the painting over the sides so that this piece does not need to be framed.
